The kitchen has been my solace since September last year. During that time, I found the courage to start an online food business that has been cooking in my head even before Covid hit the earth.

Hygge [Hooga] was born out of my love and eagerness to share a healthier food alternative that will eventually become a choice. I wanted the brand to be welcoming and not imposing. Inviting yet warm. Food that would gather people amongst stories and laughter. Thus Hooga! It means a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.

Going vegan was accidental. I was a vegetarian for a long time. Nobody forced me to do it! I also didn’t pattern my choice after someone. It was a conscious effort of taking care of myself. I went plant-based because it made me feel more alive. it made me feel good about what I was eating. It also helped me clear my head. Apart from yoga, going plant-based led me to roads less traveled.

To photograph someone who is on the same path as I am was a fulfilling experience. Janice is a certified plant-based chef! I’m sure when she starts sharing her magic with the local plant-based community in Cebu, we will all be dumbfounded by her brilliance. I am looking forward to that day when I’d be able to sit with friends and family and share a meal made by her.
