Unplugged: Marc & Marynelle
Unplugged.
I didn’t initially know what it meant until I saw the sign at the entrance of the chapel. No mobile phones to distract everybody. No social media updates to keep everyone who wasn’t there informed. It felt like I was in a bubble. The aisle where Marynelle walked on looked so peaceful. There were no mobile phones to compete with for a clean shot. Everybody looked at her and not thru his or her phones. It was so refreshing; I instantly fell in love with the word unplugged.
I’ve been doing that too in real life. I don’t get notifications from any social media platform. I turned them all off. I don’t want to waste my time scrolling Facebook’s news feed. I disliked the feeling of looking at someone’s life and making assumptions because she or he posted this. And because of these, I went back to reading books and not social updates. I want real stories and not snippets only.
It’s hard to form my own normal when everybody seems to live in constant social media updates. I’m an old soul I guess and I will always look for depth and realness.
When I photographed Marc and Marynelle as Paulo’s second shooter, it was all heart. You know where you don’t mechanically shoot because this and that were required. When I first started I was so full of emotions when I worked. So many things’d affect me during weddings. As the months and years went by, I forgot about heart. I forgot about emotions because I was influenced by what social media seem to want in photographs these days – bright, pretty, vibrancy. The drama has been lost. I don’t want to be that kind of photographer.
I want realness and the truth. I want emotions.
I want heart.
